The singer says "I'm just grateful, honestly, for each day" in the touching video
Britney Spears has opened up for the first time about what life is like now that the conservatorship which dominated her life for thirteen years has ended.
Last weekend, a judge approved the termination of Britney Spears’s conservatorship in a landmark victory.
Her case has been the subject of media headlines since the documentary 'Framing Britney Spears' was released last February, bringing awareness to the public of the extremity of the conservatorship.
For more than a decade, Britney's father Jamie Spears controlled the singer's finances, career and day-to-day life.
He was suspended from the conservatorship in September.
Britney Spears took to Instagram to update her fans on what life has been like since last year's decision in court.
She says: "I've been in a conservatorship for 13 years. It's a really long time to be in a situation you don't want to be in.
"So I'm just grateful, honestly, for each day and being able to have the keys to my car, and being able to be independent and feel like a woman; owning an ATM card, seeing cash for the first time, being able to buy candles.
"It's the little things for us women but it makes a huge difference."
She also thanked the #FreeBritney movement, saying: "You guys rock.
"Honestly, my voice was muted and threatened for so long and I wasn't able to speak up or say anything, and because of you guys kind of knowing what was going on, and delivering that news to the public, you gave an awareness to all of them.
"I honestly think you guys saved my life in a way - 100%."
Britney Spears expressed wanting to advocate for others in powerless positions in the future.
She tells her fans: "I'm here to be an advocate for people with real disabilities and real illnesses.
"I'm a very strong woman so I can only imagine what the system has done to those people. So hopefully my story will make an impact and make some changes in the corrupt system."
Britney also hinted that she plans to "set things square on @oprah" so here's hoping we see an in-depth interview with the TV legend soon.
She opened up in the caption to her Instagram post too, writing: "I do know how embarrassing is to share the fact I’ve never seen cash or wasn’t able to drive my car …. but honestly it still blows my mind every day I wake up how my family and the conservatorship were able to do what they did to me … it was demoralizing and degrading !!!!
"I’m not even mentioning all the bad things they did to me which they should all be in jail for … yes including my church going mother !!!!
"I’m used to keeping peace for the family and keeping my mouth shut … but not this time … I have NOT FORGOTTEN and I hope they can look up tonight and know EXACTLY WHAT I MEAN !!!!"
