It was undoubtedly a dream come true for Alessia Cara to win a Grammy award on Sunday night, but the criticism that she came in for must have soured the experience somewhat.

More accurately, it was the Grammys who were criticised for awarding Best New Artist award to the 21-year-old Canadian, who released her debut album in 2015. Many claimed that SZA or Khalid would have been more worthy winners, considering they have both come to prominence over the last 12 months or so.

However, Cara has now taken to Instagram to address the backlash with a lengthy post.

In it, she wrote: "I didn’t log onto grammy.com and submit myself. that’s not how it works. I didn’t ask to be submitted either because there are other artists that deserve the acknowledgment. but I was nominated and won and I am not going to be upset about something I’ve wanted since I was a kid, not to mention have worked really hard for."
