Let's-a go?
We love Mario Bros. Who doesn't? Having grown up playing various versions of 'Super Mario' and its arsenal of spin-offs on the Nintendo systems defines so much of our childhoods. But Mario and Bowser never really talked all that much...
That is, until now. A very special Nintendo Direct took place last night to showcase 'The Super Mario Bros. Movie' trailer.
Now, the movie is still a long way out from release (April 2023), but the two-and-a-half-minute teaser was certainly enough to give us a feel for what to expect from Mario, Bowser, Luigi, Toad and co next year.
Our first-look showcases the King Koopa himself, Bowser (played by Jack Black) starting a war against a group of cute icy penguin characters that Mario has been known to save (and race against) from time to time. After the video games series' main antagonist finally grabs hold of one of those beloved stars, we're introduced to Mario (voiced by Chris Pratt) who joins forces with Toad (Keegan-Michael Key) the explorer.
Also featured in the trailer is the Koopa wizard Kamek (Kevin Michael Richardson) and Mario's brother Luigi (Charlie Day) who is attempting to escape from lots of scary-looking zombie Dry Bones.
The visuals look stunning, and we wouldn't expect anything less from Illumination, the same people behind the 'Despicable Me' and 'Minions' movies.
Here's 'The Super Mario Bros. Movie' trailer.
What did you think? Bit weird, innit? Charles Martinet, who has voiced Mario in pretty much every video game since 'Super Mario 64' in 1996, is set to feature in the movie, but it's unclear in what way. Having Chris Pratt play the iconic character is going to take a lot of effort for fans to get over.
Other voice actors who are set to lend their voices to the animation are Anya Taylor Joy as Princess Peach, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as his grandfather Cranky Kong, and Sebastian Maniscalco as Foreman Spike.
'The Super Mario Bros. Movie' has a release date of April 2023.
