Prepare to be scared

Horror fans will be happy to hear there are plenty of scary movies to come in 2019.

Offerings so far this year, like 'Happy Death Day 2U' and 'Escape Room', have been lacklustre. Fortunately, there's plenty more horror on the way and here are the ones scary movie fans should be most excited about.

Us - 22 March

Hitting cinemas this week is 'Us', the first film from Jordan Peele since his Oscar-winning gamechanger 'Get Out'. Starring Lupita Nyong'o and 'The Handmaid's Tale' star Elisabeth Moss, it follows a family terrorised by a group of doppelgängers.

Pet Sematary - 4 April

Sure you can't go wrong with a Stephen King adaptation, can you? The 2019 iteration of the novel stars Jason Clarke and John Lithgow. A family moves to a rural home where they are welcomed and informed about the local 'Pet Sematary'. When they experiment with the power of the place, they come to regret it.

The Curse of La Llorana - 3 May

While not affiliated with The Conjuring Universe, 'The Curse of La Llorana' definitely recalls such instalments as 'The Nun' and thus should satisfy 'The Conjuring' fans. La Llorona is a female ghost who has lost her children. In this horror, she decides that the children of a social worker (Lina Cardellini) should belong to her.

Brightburn - 24 May

'Guardians of the Galaxy' director-writer James Gunn produced this horror written by his brother Brian and cousin Mark Gunn ('Journey 2: The Mysterious Island'). Elizabeth Banks and David Denman's ('The Us Office') characters adopt a child who crash landed on Earth. The child brings mysterious, terrifying powers with him.

Ma - 31 May

We did not know how terrifying Octavia Spencer could be until we saw the trailer for 'Ma'. Her character is a loner who invites a number of teenagers to hang out in her basement after buying alcohol for them. Her behavior towards the kids grows more and more surreal.

Child’s Play - Unknown

Yes folks, the murderous doll Chucky is back to make you scared of inanimate objects all over again. Audrey Plaza, Gabriel Bateman ('Lights Out') and Brian Tyree Henry ('Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) star in the 2019 reboot about a mother eho gives her son a toy doll for his birthday, unaware of its sinister nature.

The New Mutants - 2 August

'The New Mutants' has been delayed a number of times so both horror and superhero fans are eager for it. Maisie Williams and Anya Taylor-Joy stars as two of five young mutants who discover new abilities while held in a secret facility against their will. They fight to escape their past sins and save themselves.

Midsommar - August

Just weeks ago, the trailer dropped for 'Midsommar' from Ari Aster, the director of 'Hereditary'. If Aster's predecessor is anything to go by, this will be terrifying. Starring Florence Pugh, Jack Reynor and Will Poulter, it follows a couple who travel to Sweden to visit their friend's rural hometown for its fabled mid-summer festival. But not all is as it seems...

It: Chapter Two - 6 September

The sequel to 'It' kicks off 27 years after the events of the 2017 box office smash. Jessica Chastain and James McAvoy join the cast while Bill Skarsgård returns as the menacing Pennywise the clown. There's no trailer yet but here's everything we know about 'It: Chapter Two' so far.

Zombieland: Double Tap - 11 October

Hopes are high for the sequel to 'Zombieland', which hits cinemas 10 years after the original. All the main cast members of Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone, Jesse Eisenberg and Abigail Breslin are returning for the horror-comedy. No trailer has been released yet but according to the synopsis, the plot will focus on "evolved zombies, fellow survivors, and the growing pains of the snarky makeshift family."

Doctor Sleep - Autumn

'Pet Sematary' isn't the only Stephen King adaptation coming to cinemas in 2019. We should also see 'Doctor Sleep', the sequel to 'The Shining' which follows a grown-up Danny Torrance as he meets a young girl with powers similar to his. Ewan McGregor plays Danny while Rebecca Ferguson is the leader of a cult that Danny must protect the girl from.
