Lana Wachowski is co-writing and directing the fourth installment in the franchise
It's undoubtedly one of the most iconic sci-fi/action movies of all time - and now 'The Matrix' is set to return for a fourth installment.
Twenty years after he first inhabited the role of computer hacker-turned-Chosen One Neo in the original film, Keanu Reeves will reprise the role. Carrie-Anne Moss will also return as Trinity, while the film will be directed by Lana Wachowski, co-creator and co-director of the franchise with her sister Lilly.
The script, meanwhile, will be written by Wachowski, alongside sci-fi authors David Mitchell ('Cloud Atlas' - the film adaptation of which was also directed by the Wachowskis) and Aleksandor Hemon.
In a statement, Wachowski said: “Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now. I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends.”
There have already been two sequels, both released in 2003 - 'The Matrix Reloaded' and 'The Matrix Revolutions'. A fourth film has been rumoured for several years, with Michael B. Jordan touted in the lead role at one point.
Variety reports that production on the film will start in 2020.
The reaction on social media has largely been one of excitement, and some bemusement...
