That's a sentence I never thought I'd write
TikTok, Gen Z, short attention spans. We've heard it all before. But it looks like the obsession with pandering to a new generation isn't going away anytime soon.
It's now starting to seep into Hollywood, too. And who else would be at the forefront of such a trend than Marvel's own Russo brothers.
Joe and Anthony Russo, directors of various MCU titles including 'Captain America: Civil War' and 'Avengers: Endgame', are now branching out into Disney flicks. First up, a live action musical reinterpretation of 'Hercules'.
While the brothers will be producing the upcoming film, Guy Richie, who directed 2019's 'Aladdin' will helm it.
1997's animated version of 'Hercules' adapted the Greek legend into a childhood favourite for many despite its mixed reviews. Starring Tate Donovan, Danny DeVito, James Woods, and Susan Egan, the movie took in around $253 million at the box office.
The upcoming musical is going to be "a little bit more experimental in tone, a little bit more experimental in execution" than a straight up remake though, according to Joe Russo in an interview with Variety. And there's no more experimental a platform than TikTok.
"There are questions about how you translate it as a musical,” Russo said. "Audiences today have been trained by TikTok, right? What is their expectation of what that musical looks like and feels like? That can be a lot of fun and help us push the boundaries a little bit on how you execute a modern musical."
We're interested, if not a little sceptical, about what the Russo's mean by their comments on the upcoming project. But, we will keep our minds open for whatever they have in store. Bring on a BeReal-inspired live-action 'Bambi', we say.
