'Edge Of Tomorrow' and 'American Made' director Doug Liman also in talks to direct
A remake of the 1989 classic 'Roadhouse' has been in the works for years, with a remake with Ronda Rousey coming close to being made around 2015, but the project has found new life from an unexpected source.
Oscar nominee Jake Gyllenhaal is in talks to star in a remake, with 'Edge Of Tomorrow' and 'American Made' director Doug Liman in talks to direct, reports Deadline.
No word as of yet if Gyllenhaal will play the role of James Dalton, made famous by the late, great Patrick Swayze, or if the film is a reimagining of the 1989 film.
Both Gyllenhaal and Liman are busy men, but both are in "active talks" to take part in the film.
The new iteration of MGM has made the project a "top priority", with the studio now being headed by Michael De Luca, the Hollywood super-producer behind the likes of 'The Social Network' and 'Captain Phillips' and the upcoming Paul Thomas Anderson film 'Licorice Pizza'.
A sequel to 'Roadhouse' does exist, the aptly-titled 'Roadhouse 2', and was released in 2006, with the film only notable for 'Starship Troopers' star Jake Busey playing the villian.
A modest hit upon release, 'Roadhouse' made $30 million dollars at the box office and over $200 million thanks to various home video releases and word of mouth spreading of 'Roadhouse' about being the greatest film of all time, helping cement Patrick Swayze's reputation as one of his generations biggest stars.
The original 'Roadhouse' was rudely snubbed at the Oscars but has lived on as a 'Family Guy' joke and a scene from the film being shown in training for new NYPD officers to help de-escalate a situation.
Gyllenhaal can be next seen on our screens in Michael Bay's 'Ambulance' and director Doug Liman is reportedly limbering up for a trip into space with professional Hollywood ragdoll Tom Cruise.
