The movie is based on LaBeouf's early childhood and teenage years in Hollywood.
To put it mildly, Shia LaBeouf's early years in Hollywood were pretty tumultuous - and the best way of exorcising all of that likely comes from writing about it.
So it goes with 'Honey Boy', LaBeouf's feature-length screenwriting debut wherein he tells the story of a talented child actor (Noah Jupe, then Lucas Hedges) with a temperamental father (Shia LaBeouf) who, as well as being a registered sex offender, is also a Vietnam War veteran and a former rodeo clown. All of which, by the way, is the same story as LaBeouf's real-life father.
As mentioned, the cast includes LaBeouf, 'Russian Doll' star Natasha Lyonne as LaBeouf's thinly-veiled version of his mother, and FKA Twigs as 'Shy Girl', who we're guessing is also a thinly-veiled version of LaBeouf's former wife, Mia Goth.
The movie has already premiered at Sundance where it won high praise from critics and currently has a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. In fact, going by this trailer, it's entirely possible you might even see this end up in the Oscars next year.
Currently, 'Honey Boy' is scheduled for a US release date on November 8th, however no Irish release date has been confirmed as of yet.
