We have no problem in saying that 'Mad Max: Fury Road' is easily the greatest action movie ever made.
The sheer level of skill, dexterity, and sheer insanity that takes up the movie's runtime is still hard to fathom - and what's more, he did it all with minimal CGI, too. Looking directly at you, 'Fast and Furious', Marvel Cinematic Universe and just about every modern action movie these days.
Anyway, a sequel to 'Mad Max: Fury Road' has been teased for a long time, almost since the movie was released, but complex legal wrangling between director George Miller and Warner Bros. has meant that the whole thing's been scuppered. Now, however, it looks like there's finally something positive on the horizon according to a new interview with Miller for IndieWire.
As Miller explained, the whole thing got started "because of the chaos at Warner Bros. and not Kevin Tsujihara, it was pre all that." Kevin Tsujihara, the Warner Bros. CEO, was forced to step down after it emerged that he was using his clout in the studio system to find work for a female actor he was having an extramarital affair with. According to Miller, Tsujihara "wasn’t the antagonist" in the legal battle between him and Warners "because a lot of people didn’t know what was going on and were not prepared to make a definitive stand; everybody was running around fearful, it seems, through three regimes."
"It was hard to get anyone’s attention, so we went to litigation. The chaos has stabilized and it’s become extremely positive as the dust seems to have settled after (the merger between TimeWarner and AT&T)," said Miller. Now that's that all settled, the two 'Mad Max' sequels can finally happen. "There are two stories, both involving Mad Max, and also a Furiosa story. We’re still solving, we’ve got to play out the Warners thing, it seems to be pretty clear that it’s going to happen," confirmed Miller.
Before that, however, there's another movie from George Miller - 'Three Thousand Years of Longing', which is described as a "generational romantic epic" and will star Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton. Of course, being that it's George Miller, there's always the fear that things won't actually come to fruition. As he admitted himself, it took nearly three attempts to get 'Mad Max: Fury Road' off the ground.
"But I’ve been there too often when you announce movies are going to happen and then they fall away. It happened three times on “Fury Road,” and eventually we got the damn thing made. We’re just coming out of a meeting as we speak, and we’re well into pre-production on this one. I’m cautiously optimistic. It’s going well," Miller said.
No release date has been set for 'Three Thousand Years of Longing'.
