Hey Netflix, do this.
Disney+ is beginning to take shape and while we may not get it over here until March 2020 at the latest, it's beginning to look like a promising alternative to Netflix.
For one, it'll have a gigantic range of Disney-related movies, TV shows and original shows like 'The Mandalorian', 'The Falcon and Winter Soldier', and even Jeff Goldblum is getting a documentary series.
Not only that, it looks like Disney+ is also bringing back something that's been missing from streaming services since they launched - namely, director's commentaries. The news comes from journalist Eric Vespe, who was at D23 this weekend and got a demo of Disney+.
We actually opined previously that Netflix should bring them back, and it looks like Disney heard us. (They definitely didn't) For those of you too young to remember or maybe you didn't care enough, director's commentaries were kind of like podcasts for the movie you were watching.
You had the director, maybe the cast, a producer or writer and they piled themselves into a quiet recording booth and watched the movie you were watching, and talked over it. The whole idea behind it was to give an extra layer of examination, and really, studios just wanted special features so they could flog more DVDs.
It worked, because before long, director's commentaries became a real hit with movie fans. It also gave us moments like Ben Affleck recalling that Michael Bay told him to shut up on the set of 'Armageddon' for pointing out an obvious flaw with the movie.
There's more. As well as director's commentaries, Disney+ will also include other special features like deleted scenes and behind-the-scenes documentaries on whatever movie has them as part of its service at no extra charge.
The downside to all this, however, is that Disney+ won't have any R-rated content. In other words, movies such as 'Alien', 'Predator', 'Die Hard' and 'Deadpool' that are in the Fox library - which Disney now owns - will be most likely be shunted to Hulu, which Disney also owns.
As it stands, there's no word yet on whether Hulu will launch in Ireland. Shortly after the announcement of Disney's takeover of Fox, Disney overlord Bob Iger said that they were looking at potentially expanding Hulu to the rest of the world, but nothing more has come of it.
For now, we'll just have to wait until Disney+ launches here in Ireland.
