Barbra Streisand says 2018's 'A Star Is Born' lacked originality

"I don't care so much about success as I do originality."

Three years on from allegedly giving her blessing to the remake, the 79-year-old singer-turned-actor has walked back her praise, saying it was "the wrong idea".

Three Oscar wins and millions of dollars in the bank later, Barbra Streisand really didn't care for Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga's 'A Star Is Born' all that much in terms of how similar it was to her own movie version.

Originally a 1937 film starring Janet Gaynor and Fredric March, the premise spawned three further remakes, one of which Streisand was a part of. Her 1976 version saw her play the female lead opposite Kris Kristofferson.

When Cooper and Gaga were interviewed by Entertainment Weekly around the time of their film's release, they spoke of when the acclaimed actor gave them her "blessing" while she visited the set. However, her most recent point of view proves that she was looking for more "originality" from the remake.

Speaking on the Australian talk show 'The Project', the star said she initially thought it was Beyonce and Will Smith that were doing to be in the film. She said: "At first, when I heard it was going to be done again, it was supposed to be Will Smith and Beyoncé, and I thought, that's interesting. Really make it different again, different kind of music, integrated actors, I thought that was a great idea.

"So, I was surprised when I saw how alike it was to the version that I did in 1976. I thought it was the wrong idea but it was a big success, I can't argue with success. But I don't care so much about success as I do originality."

Barbra Streisand previously praised Lady Gaga's interpretation of the struggling music star in 'A Star Is Born', saying in an interview with Extra: "I think it's wonderful. She's wonderful. [....] I think it's great, they're going to have a big hit."

And a big hit it was, earning over $430 million at the box office on a budget of $36 million. As well as being a three-time Oscar winner, the movie's soundtrack also won four Grammy awards.
