Michael Jackson and Rage Against The Machine absent; Africa by Toto survives
In the upcoming 'Grand Theft Auto' trilogy, some tracks from the games will be missing due to licensing issues.
The radio playlists will be the same as the current versions you can get on Playstation 4, Steam, and Xbox One, so the majority of tracks remain, but some have slipped through the cracks.
This is not tremendously surprising, as Rockstar obtained the licenses for these tracks well over 20 years, and simply didn't reacquire them or the licences changed hands over the years.
Renewing music licenses for film, television and video games is tremendously tricky; it's a large part of why the likes of 'Miami Vice' and 'Northern Exposure' are so expensive to buy as boxsets - the large volume of licensed music in those shows means the production cost goes up and is reflected in the pricing.
Over 90% of the tracks from the original three games are still present, but the short version is don't expect the full suite of songs from the Playstation 2 era.
The most notable absences from the collection include 'Billie Jean' by Michael Jackson, Ozzy Osbourne's 'Bark At The Moon' and Lionel Richie's 'Running With The Night' from 'Vice City', 'and 'Express Yourself' by N.W.A. and Killing In The Name' by Rage Against The Machine and 'Runnin' Down A Dream' by Tom Petty from 'San Andreas'.
Managing to keep over 90% of the original songs is still a feat in its own right, but the absences will be sorely felt.
Players booting up 'Vice City' in 2002 were treated to the opening snatches of 'Billie Jean' as they hop on a scooter, and quickly established itself as one of gaming's most iconic moments.
No fear; we can just switch to V-Rock instead and rock out to Megadeth or Emotion 98.3 and drive around listening to 'Africa' by Toto.
As for the absence of Rage Against The Machine from 'San Andreas?'
We'll just switch over to K-DST and hope that 'A Horse With No Name' comes on.
