Listen here: Willow Smith samples Radiohead... kinda well
Not the most likely mix of all time but celebrity 12 year old daughter to Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, Willow Smith has released a new song entitled ‘Sugar and Spice’ which samples the ethereal piano-led space-ballad ‘Codex’ off Radiohead’s latest album ‘The King of Limbs’. The combination seems even more unlikely considering her 2010 musical debut ‘Whip My Hair’ could well have been one of Rebecca Black’s major influences. But ‘Sugar and Spice’ features proper singing (the girl has pipes) and lyrics seemingly about the frustrating melancholy of being a preteen girl.
The backing track adds little to the Radiohead original but an unnamed producer flourishes Willow’s vocal delivery with echo and spacey reverb. The melody is surprisingly effective and the lyrics feature metaphor and all that good stuff.
No word as of yet on a commercial release, legal issues may arise, but for now we can listen to what is, against all odds, actually a very good song.
