It's been almost 15 years since Aaliyah died in a plane crash while returning from a video shoot in the Bahamas.
The r&b singer was just 22 at the time of her death, and now her ex-boyfriend and producer Damon Dash has spoken about how her passing affected him. The pair were in a relationship when she died.
He claimed on TV show The Real that if he had been with Aaliyah at the time, they would not have gotten on the plane that crashed and that he was against her going to the Bahamas to film a video for 'Rock the Boat' in the first place.
"She told me she was going to the Bahamas and I was against it, like, 'Yo, don't go.' And then down to the last -- we had the Blackberry -- down to the last Blackberry that we had, before she went there, she was like, 'Yo, I don't like that plane.' And I was like, 'Don't get on it.' And she was just like, 'You know, I gotta do it.' You know, it was a complicated situation, but she had to go do that video."
The smaller plane that Aaliyah ultimately took back to the US crashed soon after take-off, killing her and eight other people. After the crash, it was deemed to have exceeded its weight by 700 pounds, and the pilot Luis Morales was found to have traces of cocaine and alcohol in his system. He was also proved to have falsified his pilot's licence.
