What do you do if you're a band and you want to raise money for a tour? Some would consider releasing an EP to take in some funds, others would consider a Kickstarter campaign but Michigan funk band Vulpeck had other, more inventive, ideas.
Vulpeck released an album called 'Sleepify' on Spotify in March of this year but what makes the record unique is that it doesn't have one note on the entire thing. Nada. It's 10 songs of complete and utter silence, with each song having a running time of just over 30 seconds. That doesn't sound too impressive, right? Well, you'll change your mind when you hear exactly how much money they raised - nearly $20,000.
How so, we hear you cry? Well, Vulpeck asked their fans on social to media to play 'Sleepify' on repeat while they slept night after night so that they could slowly but surely take advantage of the rates that Spotify pays for each stream of a song. The going rate for a spin on Spotify is around $0.007 per track which doesn't sound like very much but begins to add up over time, especially if you consider 100 plays would bag the band about 70 cent.
Spotify wised up to this scheme and removed the album from their service but not before Vulpeck had raised a pretty hefty sum with which to tour. Fair play lads, now if you'll excuse us we're off to record an album...
