Tom Hardy's no stranger to gruelling film shoots, but his latest project might be a step too far - even for him.
Deadline reports that Hardy has signed on to play Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton, who was born in Kilkea, Co. Kildare. A biopic has been in the works at Sony that follows Shackleton's ill-fated expedition to Antarctica aboard the ice-ship Endurance, which was eventually lost with Shackleton and his expedition spending close to a year on ice floes trying to survive.
That script was written by Oscar-winning writer Steve Zaillian, however it's understood that Peter Straughan - who wrote the film adaptation of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Lenny Abrahamson's Frank - has penned a completely new script with financing secured from StudioCanal.
No director has been signed on as of yet, however it's believed that the film is being fast-tracked with Hardy onboard. Hardy will next appear in Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk, alongside Kenneth Brannagh, Cillian Murphy and Mark Rylance.
