Liverpool beat combo The La's have gone down in history as the great lost hope of British pop. Soon after they released this album in 1989, songwriter Lee Mavers became a recluse and has released nothing since, while bassist John Power got fed up and formed the popular but mediocre Britpop band Cast. This stylishly packaged re-issue gives you some idea of what the fuss was about; in particular There She Goes is drenched with beautifully intricate harmonies and fully deserves its status as an indie classic. Not all the songs are as good as this, but there's more than enough great material to make you wish that even at this late stage Mavers would consider coming out of premature retirement.
