Pet Shop Boys, Johnny Cash, Jeff Buckley, Muse and Sinead O'Connor all included in a rather eclectic top ten.

'Always On My Mind' by the Pet Shop Boys has been chosen as the best cover version ever recorded in a recent poll by BBC, overseen by a team of tastemakers including DJs Fearne Cotton, Trevor Nelson, Simon Mayo and Steve Lamacq, as well as the heads of Radio 2 and 6 Music.

The song, written back in 1972, has been recorded by Elvis Presley and Willie Nelson in the past but it's the Pet Shop Boys version which can now lay claim to being the best of them all - more than 27 years after it first topped the charts in the UK.

Johnny Cash's hugely powerful version of Nine Inch Nails' 'Hurt' takes second place in the poll, with The Stangler's 'Walk On By', Jimi Hendrix's 'All Along The Watchtower' and Jeff Buckley's cover of Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah' completes the top five.
