Steven Lindsay has been waiting a long time for his day in the sun. He started out with the ill-fated Glasgow pop band Big Dish, but has spent the last decade as a manager, producer and TV soundtrack composer. Now, at last, he's got around to making a solo album - and the result is nothing less than a minor masterpiece. Probably as a reaction against the fact that Big Dish were often too glossy for their own good, the instrumentation is sparse and unobtrusive, mainly made up of haunting piano and subtle string arrangements. This is no bad thing, since Lindsay now sings uncannily like Bono (with whom he once collaborated) - and there are plenty of songs here that would grace any U2 album. A hugely impressive piece of work that gets better with every listen, Exit Music is proof positive that some things are well worth waiting for.
