It's just been announced that Spotify have bought Soundwave, a Dublin-based music app that has been downloaded over 1.5 million times.

Soundwave places emphasis on sharing music via social media, allowing users to see what music is trending nearby and enabling people to share and explore music in private groups with their friends. Its financial backers include former U2 manager Paul McGuinness and American businessman Mark Cuban.

It's big news for Soundwave founder and CEO Brendan O'Driscoll, who tweeted his delight at the news this morning:

Going forward, it means that Spotify are obviously looking for even more ways to connect people with music via their service, and we can't wait to see how they implement it.
