For many years, it was heavily rumoured that Prince kept a large vault of unreleased material in his Paisley Park compound.

The singer, who was both highly secretive and incredibly prolific, is said to have kept literally hundreds and thousands of recordings, music videos, jamming sessions, live concerts and creative materials securely locked inside his home in Minnesota.

However, with his unfortunate passing, the fate of Prince's vault became uncertain. The story goes that Prince - and only Prince - had the keycode to the vault and did not allow or give anyone access to either the vault or the keycode itself.

With the legal wrangling over Prince's estate ongoing, his vault has now reportedly been opened. Prince's sister, Tyka Nelson, has filed legal documents in their native Minnesota to the effect that Prince Rogers Nelson kept no will.

Under state law and without the absence of a will or a trust, Prince's estate - including the vault - will go to his sister and his five half-siblings. A local news affiliate in Minnesota is reporting that Bremer Trust, the company given temporary control over Prince's estate, have drilled into the vault and opened it.

It's understood that such is the volume and size of Prince's vault that one album could be released every single year from now until the end of the century.

Whether or not that happens remains to be seen.
