Described as 'a spectacular celebration of the music of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons', New Jersey Nights is about as guaranteed a great night out as it gets. The show has smashed box office records right across the USA and UK and is proving to be one of the most successful touring shows of all times. Basically, guaranteed craic will be had, and it's soon to making away its way back to Dublin.
We spoke to the man behind this hugely successful show, internationally acclaimed theatre producer David King (pictured centre above) who has been in the business for over twenty years now, with more than 25 productions to his name and owns three major theatres in America. In other words he's kind of a big deal, he was even on The Secret Millionaire before although that all didn't go exactly to plan, as we'll tell you in a minute.
King talked to entertainment.ie recently about this successful show of his saying; 'It sold out when it was over earlier on this year and it's back now in a different venue and we're very excited.' (The show which was on in the Gaiety last February, managed to sell out every night for a week).
'I came with the show then', he went on to say, 'and the audience reaction to the show... I've never seen an audience like it and I've been with the show all over the world. Happy, singing their heads off from the minute the show started. I don't know if this happens all the time in Dublin but it was just great to see it."
While David (thankfully) wasn't aware of the whole Garth Brooks fiasco, we did point out that Garth's loss might be his gain, considering it could work as a good alternative for those who had big nights out at Brooks planned. David said though that he was 'sorry to hear that, I never like it when anything goes wrong but if there's people who are around who want something to do then come and see New Jersey Nights, you will have a bloody good night!'
As we mentioned, the theatre producer has made such success of his shows that he was on the Secret Millionaire a couple years ago in the UK. Although his stint on the show managed to make headlines all around the world; King was the victim of a carjacking in the week of filming of the show and the incident captured the world's attention, you may remember the 'Secret Millionaire kidnapped' headlines at the time.
David told us about this terrifying experience; 'What happened was it was half way through the week [of filming Secret Millionaire], we had just being doing some fundraising and I came out and sat in the car, ready for the driver to take me back to the hotel. Then from nowhere this drunk guy jumped in the car, started the car up and shot off, with me in it. He was driving down these narrow streets at 60 miles an hour, it was horrific, I seriously believed that I wouldn't get out."
Fortunately for David, a van pulled out onto the street so that the drunk driver had to screech to a stop, and he managed to get out of the car while the driver shot off and smashed the car up. He was never caught at the time but then a similar incident happened a few months later only this time the drunk driver killed a taxi driver and was sent to prison for eight years for manslaughter, and a year extra for what happened with King.
"It was a very close call and I'm very fortunate that I managed to get out in one piece". said David.
Thankfully though, these days life is going great for the producer with no signs of the popularity of his shows fading anytime soon.
