Natalie Imbruglia's debut single Torn was such a phenomenal success that it's easy to forget the accompanying album was essentially a run of the mill collection of indie rock. Three years on, the follow-up shows that the former Neighbours star has made disappointingly little progress. White Lilies Island isn't exactly a bad album, but like Imbruglia herself it's just a little too pallid and polite to get really excited about. Her songs of emotional turmoil are carefully constructed and sung in an agreeably breathy manner - but there's no real sense of conviction behind them and the lyrics slide into blandness rather too often for comfort. Time, surely, for a rethink.
