So who exactly is Lisa Marie Presley? Given that she's spent her whole life overshadowed by the men around her, from father Elvis to ex-husbands Michael Jackson and Nicolas Cage, it's not an easy question to answer. According to herself that's exactly why she's decided to record her own album, as a way of establishing herself as a talented woman in her own right. Given that it's essentially a vanity project, then, we should probably be thankful that To Whom It May Concern really isn't that bad, a straightforward rock record that owes a heavy debt to both Cher and Alanis Morissette. She may not have inherited much of her father's charisma, but Presley's masculine, husky voice proves to be a surprisingly effective vehicle for these confessional songs that deal with everything from her troubled marriages to the drug addiction that ruined her adolescence. What really holds the album back is a dated 1980s production that leaves no room for subtlety and ends up suffocating Presley's personality. But at least there's enough here to show that she has one.
