Joseph Gordon-Levitt will star as infamous cult leader Jim Jones in a dramatisation of the Jonestown Massacare.

The '500 Days Of Summer', 'Don Jon', and 'Trial Of The Chicago 7' star will play the role of Jones, a cult leader who gained fame in the 50s and 60s for his Peoples Temple cult.

The cult gained traction in California during this time, before Jones and his followers set up a commune in the South American country of Guyana in 1974.

In November 1978, Jones instructed his followers to drink Kool-Aid laced with cyanide, resulting in the deaths of 918 people.

The Jonestown Massacre was the singular greatest loss of life by a deliberate act in American history until the September 11th attacks.

Chloe Grace-Moretz will play survivor Deborah Layton, whose book 'Seductive Poison' serves as the basis for the film.

Layton was drawn into Jones’ inner circle and became a leading member of the People’s Temple before finding out the truth about him and trying to expose him to the world.

'White Night' will be directed by Anne Sewitsky, who has garnered critical acclaim for directing the BBC drama 'A Very British Scandal'.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, 'White Night' is a "psychological thriller".

“Debbie’s incredible journey with the People’s Temple deserves an audience across generations," said Amy Nauiokas, CEO at production company Archer Grey.

"It should serve as a warning about the power a certain type of charismatic leader can have and the very real lessons to be learned from our history," she added.

“When we first read (screenwriter) Bill Wheeler’s adaptation, it was seeing this infamous story from Deborah’s point of view that unlocked it psychologically and dramatically,” said FilmNation’s President of Production Ashley Fox.

"Entering Jim Jones’ magnetic orbit through the eyes of an idealistic, passionate young woman reminded us that anyone can fall victim to extremism, given the right circumstances"

Gordon-Levitt isn't the only Hollywood star being lined up to play Jim Jones, with Leonardo DiCaprio also set to play the cult leader in a film.

Gordon-Levitt will be on our screens in 2022 as Uber CEO Travis Kalanick in 'Super Pumped: The Battle For Uber' while Grace-Moretz is currently filming sci-fi show 'The Peripheral' alongside Irish star Jack Reynor.

Filming on 'White Night' will begin filming this Spring.
