Old Clash fans should be warned - Joe Strummer's latest venture has as much in common with the airy pastures of world music as it does with the political punk-rock that made him famous. With his new band the Mescaleros, Strummer seems to be concerned with packing as many styles as he can into one album, dabbling in ska-metal, reggae and some disappointingly ham-fisted funk. It's all a bit hit and miss, with the odd spine-tingling moment of brilliance marred by such irritating self-indulgences as an 18-minute closing track. Still, Strummer can still turn in a powerfully acerbic vocal performance when he puts his mind to it and this alone helps to make Global A Go-Go a very listenable album.
