Finding Neverland, the Peter Pan-themed Broadway musical that Take That's Gary Barlow wrote the songs for, hasn't gone down too well with critics.
The show opened on Wednesday night in New York, with big-name actors like Kelsey Grammer (aka Frasier) and Matthew Morrison (Glee) in roles. It's an adaptation of the 2004 film 'Finding Neverland', which starred Johnny Depp as J.M. Barrie, the author of Peter Pan.
It seems, however, that most critics have had a problem with Barlow's songs, which he co-wrote with songwriter Eliot Kennedy.
USA Today said "Barlow and Kennedy… provide mostly syrupy ballads and vaguely peppy production numbers". Another reviewer wrote "Most of Barlow and Kennedy’s songs are dull adult contemporary ballads, forgotten before they’re even over", while The Star Ledger said that the music and lyrics "too often lean toward syrupy ballads riddled with cliches."
Never mind, Gaz - you've always got Take That to fall back on if the career in musicals flop. Take That, incidentally, play Dublin's 3Arena on May 8th and 9th.
