Tributes and memories of David Bowie continue to pour in as the world mourns his passing and while most have been warm and fuzzy, the one shared by Coldplay's Jonny Buckland and Will Champion is hilarious and dark in all the right ways.
Speaking to NME after receiving the mag's 'Godlike Genius Award 2016', the two band members at first reminisce about how Bowie's music impacted their lives.
"I felt incredibly sad when I heard David Bowie had died," said Buckland. "We've all loved his music for as long as we've known about music." Champion continued by saying, "When you have any involvement in music he was one of the points of reference for absolutely everything, for genres and for how to be a rockstar or a popstar or whatever it was. Completely defining that. So for musicians it's quite disorienting."
The real gem, however, comes in the form of a tale about their attempt to work with the legend. According to the band, Chris Martin once wrote to Bowie asking him if he wanted to sing on a track he'd written that had a "David Bowie-type character" in it, to which Bowie responded, "It's not a very good song, is it?".
The band remember it fondly though, with Champion saying "He was very discerning - he wouldn't just put his name to anything. I'll give him credit for that."
