The Live at the Iveagh Gardens gig series got underway last night, with a gig by cabaret vamp Paloma Faith.
Over the next week or so, some top-notch acts will play the beautiful outdoor venue in Dublin – so we thought we'd make a playlist to give you a flavour of what's to come.
CHIC – 'Good Times'
Anyone who's seen Chic live over the last few years will know that you just can't go wrong with this band. Nile Rodgers is a bona fide legend, and this is one of the disco/funk pioneers' biggest hits. They play next Thursday, July 9th.
THE FRAMES – 'Lay Me Down'
The Frames play two gigs this weekend (July 4th and 5th) celebrating their 25th anniversary as a band – no mean feat. This track, taken from arguably their finest album 'For the Birds', is a gem.
ST. VINCENT – 'Digital Witness'
Annie Clark is one of the best, most inventive musicians out there at the moment – a reputation solidified by her brilliant self-titled album last year. This was undoubtedly one of the best tracks of 2014. She plays next Friday, July 10th.
MEW – 'Am I Wry? No'
Danish band Mew don't get a whole lot of love from the press, and they're not going to have a number one hit anytime soon. But they're quirky, idiosyncratic architects of art-rock and their debut album 'Frengers' remains a firm favourite on our turntable. This song is bloody brilliant. They support St. Vincent next week.
DAMIEN RICE – 'The Professor & La Fille Danse'
He made a comeback last year with his first album in a bajillion years, 'My Favourite Faded Fantasy', which was more than decent. We still have a soft spot for his debut, 'O', though – especially this song.
BOOKA BRASS BAND – 'Crazy in Love'
These guys are supporting The Frames this weekend and are well worth getting in early for. What can eight college students do with a variety of brass instruments? Well, you'd be surprised. They're building up quite an Irish fanbase with their quirky take on tracks like this Beyonce cover.
