Hit podcast series The Horror of Dolores Roach written and directed by Aaron Mark and starring Daphne Rubin-Vega and Bobby Cannavale originally began life as a one-woman play entitled Empanada Loca. Mark is one of the creative forces behind an eight-part adaptation of a contemporary urban legend with discomfiting echoes of Sweeney Todd. Dolores Roach (Justina Machado) serves 16 years behind bars and returns to gentrified Washington Heights to acclimatise to life on the outside. She reunites with old friend Luis (Alejandro Hernandez), who owns an empanada shop. He has a mutually convenient business proposal, Dolores can live in the basement under his shop and also run her business as a masseuse from the property. The ex-con embraces her nickname, 'Magic Hands', but cruel fate eventually conspires against Dolores and she resorts to drastic actions to cling onto her freedom
