The Goodies

1970

'The Goodies' were Tim Brooke-Taylor, Graeme Garden and Bill Oddie. The trio worked in a spacious office and were willing to do any ridiculous task to earn their living, in a series combining surreal sketches and situation comedy. Tim's character was pretentious, Graeme was a middle-class technical expert and Bill presented himself as the man of the people, often donning a flat cap to express his working-class credentials. The Goodies featured a lot of slapstick and low-budget comic-book effects and was known for being extremely silly, appealing to children and adults alike. In the memorable episode 'Kitten Kong', Graeme feeds a white kitten called Twinkle a specially formulated growth mixture, causing the fluffy creature to grow to super-size proportions. Bill lets Twinkle out for the night and the kitten ends up destroying St Paul's Cathedral and the Post Office Tower, and squashing TV presenter Michael Aspel with his huge paw. This King Kong spoof won the trio a Silver Rose in 1972 at the Montreux TV festival. Some episodes featured parodies of contemporary pop music, some of which went on to have genuine success in the British pop charts, including 'The Funky Gibbon'. The show was originally broadcast between 1970 and 1982, and other than the last series was a BBC production; the final run was made and broadcast by ITV.
