"The Comic Strip Presents…" is a series of self-contained comedy dramas closely associated with an ensemble British performers dubbed as 'alternative comedians' when they first came to prominence in the 1980s. They include Adrian Edmondson, Dawn French, Rik Mayall, Nigel Planer, Peter Richardson and Jennifer Saunders. The first episode was Five Go Mad in Dorset, a parody of Enid Blyton's The Famous Five, which premiered on the opening night of Channel 4 on November 2, 1982. After several series and specials for Channel 4, the show moved to BBC2 in 1990. Notable episodes include The Strike, a Hollywood portrayal of the 1984 Miners' dispute, and GLC: The Carnage Continues, a Hollywood parody of the 1980s takeover of the Greater London Council by Labour stalwart Ken Livingstone and subsequent disbanding of the body by then-prime minister Margaret Thatcher. The show set itself apart from other comedies of its day by tackling controversial social and political themes, something that was quite radical in the early 1980s. It returned to Channel 4 in 1998 with Four Men in a Car. This was followed in 2000 by Men in a Plane, and in 2005 by Sex Actually. More recently, The Hunt for Tony Blair starring Stephen Mangan as the former prime minister surfaced on Channel 4 in October 2011. A sequel to Five Go Mad in Dorset, entitled Five Go to Rehab, was shown as part of Channel 4's 30th anniversary schedule in November 2012.
