The Bill
1984'The Bill' is a crime drama following the work of police officers at Sun Hill, a police station in the fictional borough of Canley in the east end of London. Created by Geoff McQueen, it originally ran in a post-watershed slot for an hour and introduced a number of characters that resonated with viewers, including Sergeant Bob Cryer (Eric Richard), Sergeant June Ackland (Trudie Goodwin), Detective Sergeant Jim Carver (Mark Wingett), Detective Chief Inspector Tommy (later Frank) Burnside (Christopher Ellison) and Chief Superintendent Charles Brownlow (Peter Ellis). In 1988, the series changed to a half-hour episode twice a week and began broadcasting before 9pm. The number of episodes increased to three in 1993 on the back of the continued success of the show, and during 2002 it became more of a serial drama with an increased focus on the personal lives of the characters. A live episode in 2003 commemorated the show's 20th anniversary. It premiered on ITV in 1984 and ran until 2010, clocking up 2,400 episodes. Repeat showings can be found on Watch.
