Sharon Osbourne's Lorna Simpson became the first casualty of the X Factor Live Shows this evening as the judges controversially decided that she had failed to out-sing Over 25's rival Shelley Smith during the first sing-off of the series.
Shelley was voted into the bottom two during Saturday night's Flash Vote (that new procedure which sees viewers getting 10 minutes to decide who should be first up for the boot) while Lorna found herself up for the chop after the regular public vote this evening. Shelley belted out One Night Only (from Dreamgirls) for survival while Lorna fought for a second chance with Faith Hill's There You'll Be.
Unfortunately for Lorna, it just wasn't to be: Gary wanted to keep her on board but both Louis and Nicole opted to save Shelley, while Sharon abstained from the vote.
Tonight's result will no doubt come as a blow for Mrs O, who seemed rather determined to win the competition from the off this year. That said, she's still got prison offer Sam Bailey among her ranks: You can't go far wrong with the justice system's answer to Mary Byrne now, can you?
