Those of you watching the latest TV offering for Batman - Gotham - will know already that it's a prequel to the movie franchise and stars Ben McKenzie as a young Detective James Gordon and David Mazouz as a teenage Bruce Wayne.

This of course means that we have seen a number of younger versions of the comic's most famous stars, including The Joker, whose arrival to the series has been hinted at with the character of Jerome White, but his full reveal was only shown recently in the impressive season three winter finale, 'The Gentle Art of Making Enemies'.

Actor Cameron Monaghan has been praised for his performance as the iconic villain, and rightly so. The actor told comicbook.com that it was more the comic he took his inspiration from for the character and not any other recent portrayals.

"There was never a moment where I was intentionally cribbing from another actor. More so, I grew up watching other actors design the character of The Joker to me and obviously the part was paying tribute to The Joker, and so I wanted to you know perform it to the best of my abilities in a way that it seemed to be paying homage to the character."

Monaghan said he had "a very large stack of Joker comics, definitely over 50 [collections] at this point, so I was taking bits and pieces from whatever I could."

He went on to say,"You know, the great thing about Gotham is because it exists in its own canon, it's not specifically coming from one source. It means that we can kind of translate the best of any world that we want and take anything from pretty much anywhere, and so we did."
