We're barely a month removed from the end of Breaking Bad but showrunner Vince Gilligan isn't resting on his considerable plaudits and praise and is jumping right back into TV land with the Breaking Bad spinoff 'Better Call Saul', which will follow the adventures of crooked lawyer Saul Goodman who was so excellently played by Bob Odenkirk throughout Breaking Bad's final seasons.
Initially conceived as a half-hour sitcom, Gilligan and BCS show runner Peter Gould decided that the show's narrative couldn't survive in the laugh-a-minute world of the sitcom and it has been upgraded to the one hour (well, 42-odd minutes) that we knew and loved in the Breaking Bad universe.
"We're both one hour drama guys", Gilligan said of he and Gould. "So we figured, 'Why not shoot 'Saul' in the same way? Let's shoot it in Albuquerque, let's get as much of the crew back together as possible and let's do it the way we did it before so that it will be a of a piece with that pre-existing fictional universe that we has so much fun creating."
The best news? AMC (who aired Breaking Bad, of course) have agreed to the pick it up and what's more, Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul are both tipped to make cameo appearances.
"Personally, I'd have a hard time resisting putting all these guys in for a cameo or two every now and then", Gilligan elaborated.
While this is undoubtedly great news for anyone who enjoyed Breaking Bad let's make sure that we rein back our excitement slightly as spin-offs of popular TV series' can often end in tears as anyone who watched more than 90 seconds of 'Joey' will attest too. Gilligan isn't immune to failure either, as his X-Files spin-off 'The Lone Gunmen' failed to set pulses racing.
