The BBC landed itself in a bit of hot water this week after it was revealed that one of the more amusing stunts on Top Gear had actually been faked, with actors pretending to be outraged diners at a riverside restaurant who were soaked by the boys' 'Hovervan'.
The Daily Mail revealed that the scenes had been filmed on the River Avon, with actors filling in as soaked members of the public, and viewers took to the internet to complain about the team's trickery. However, another group of fans took to Twitter not long after the article in question was published, and proceeded to give out about their fellow Top Gear watchers' apparent gullibility.
Did ppl SERIOUSLY think this wasn't staged?? Another Top Gear FAKE: presenters 'infuriate' riverside diners https://t.co/elVFOAG8aS

I don't understand people's surprise and disgust when they 'discover' the majority of Top Gear is a stunt... Obviously?!

The good folks at the BBC eventually pitched in, arguing that they believed their viewers were "intelligent enough not to have been taken in." Here's hoping they haven't insulted half their audience there now, eh?
