It's fair to say, we are a nation of telly addicts, and while we have our own crop of talented people here making great shows (thanks Stuart Carolan), there are a load more across the pond we are glued to. All of the stars of which, last night gathered around to tell each other how great they all are at The National Television Awards in Britain. The awards show went off without a hitch, with no long cringeworthy speeches, or indeed no major wardrobe malfunctions. Well, unless you count Kelly Brook on the red carpet, but maybe... she meant it to be that way?
Our own Mrs Brown's Boys went and scooped Best Comedy for the second year in a row. Whatever you want to say about that show, the people like it. And you know what, I'm going to risk going out on the limb here and say, it's... not bad. *ducks for cover*. Brendan O' Carroll has great comic timing and the whole ensemble work really well together. Look, in short, it's no Father Ted but it has its moments. And fair play to Brendan for giving some Irish comedy international recognition again. Now. How do you like them apples?
Corrie also won big last night, clinching the coveted Best Serial Drama Award (EastEnders were raging), as well as Julie Hesmondhalgh winning Serial Drama Performance for her role as the ill-fated Hayley Cropper on the show. Hayley's death stirred a massive reaction from Corrie fans this week, as she chose to end her own life after battling cancer. The award couldn't have been more well-deserved, with the actress going up to collect it with fellow nominee and screen husband, David Nielson. The pair were overjoyed at her win, as we all watched on trying to get our head around the fact that they were real people, and not Roy and Hayley, our favourite cafe owners.
Other big wins on the night included the impossible to defeat Ant and Dec. Those lads won the Entertainment Award for a whopping 13 years in a row! They're great and all, don't get me wrong, but what about our Graham Norton? That man definitely deserved it too, but it seems the public will always choose the ultimate bromance that is Ant and Dec. It wasn't the end of their jaunts to the stage either, with the pair unexpectedly winning the Landmark Award to mark their 25 years on telly. Who'd have thought young PJ and Duncan would last for as long as they have? They genuinely do seem like besties though, with Dec saying; "Neither of us would be here if it weren't for each other." Naawwww.
Here's the selfie they took on stage of their win!
Other wins on the night included I'm a Celebrity for entertainment programme, Matt Smith of Doctor Who won Best Drama Performance, and in most predictable win of the night - Benedict Cumberbatch won TV Detective for Sherlock. That category just came about this year, and is possibly just a sign that TV may be overdoing the whole detective thing right now. Kiefer Sutherland, aka Jack Bauer, presented the award though, so that was pretty cool - even if we are all fed up to our EYEBALLS with '24'. Cumberbatch wasn't there to accept the award either, but made his speech from LA - in his swim shorts. That Benny 'ey, some divil,
