So this is, eh, interesting.

NBC is reportedly making a modern-day adaptation of the classic novel Oliver Twist.

The novel has been adapted for the big and small screen before, the best-known one being 1968 hit musical film Oliver! Most recently, in 2005, Roman Rolanski adapted the novel for a feature, with less success.

The new series will be a gritty urban procedural with a female lead (We’re getting slowly but surely further away from the original here, but anyway).

The series, which is called Twist (you can say that again), has the following logline: ‘A sexy contemporary take on Oliver Twist with a struggling 20-something female (Twist) who finally finds a true sense of family in a strange group of talented outcasts who use their unique skills to take down wealthy criminals.’

Chad Damiani and J.P. Lavin will write the script and exec produce. Joel Silver and Lionsgate (under TV banner Silver Pictures Television) will develop the drama with NBC.

The news comes days after Fox has announced it intends to update the tale of King Arthur as a modern-day police procedural called Camelot…
