Last night saw the triumphant return of The Crystal Maze to TV screens without Z-list celebrities or Richard O'Brien, but with every bit of its charm intact.
The new series, fronted by The IT Crowd's Richard Ayoade, sees two groups battling it out across four zones - Aztec, Medieval, Future and Ocean - for crystals that'll give them more time in the Crystal Dome to grab as many golden tickets as they possibly can. The show even used much of the same graphics, and even the iconic theme from the original, while updating the sets.
By and large, the response from Twitter was largely positive and most people were much more happier to see real people - not celebrities - in the game.

#CrystalMaze vastly improved without the z list celebrities. Not every TV programme needs to feature a talentless prat.

Really enjoyed the show. So glad they brought it back. Richard Ayoade is just perfect. And I do prefer the non celeb version. #crystalmaze

As for Richard Ayoade on hosting duties, it's safe to say he's got the weird humour and weirder suits required to be a host for Crystal Maze.
I didn't think anyone could replace Richard O'Brian, how wrong was I. @RichardAyoade is a legend 🙌 #crystalmaze

Choosing Richard Ayoade was a genius move. #CrystalMaze
