We've spent the guts of a year trying to figure out whether or not Andrew Scott's Moriarty lived to tell the tale of his last showdown with Benedict Cumberbatch's Sherlock, and now the show's producers have completely thrown us by revealing that they've cast a brand new bad guy for Season 3.

Meet Lars Mikkelsen, whom you might already know as the brother of Hannibal star Mads Mikkelsen, or the bloke from the original Danish version of The Killing and hit TV drama Borgen. He'll be taking on the role of Sherlock's new nemesis" Charles Augustus Magnussen, and we couldn't be more excited about it.

We still don't have full details about his character, but if we're working off 'canon' Holmes literature, we're guessing he's an updated incarnation of Charles Augustus Milverton, a murderous blackmailer whom Holmes and Watson have to deal with in a short story from 1904.

Sherlock executive producer Sue Vertue confirmed that Mikkelsen had joined the cast on Twitter earlier today, but didn't say a thing about fan favourite Moriarty. We do hope we haven't seen the last of Andrew Scott on the show, even if he wasn't to everyone's tastes.

Sherlock Season 3 is expected to air on BBC One later this year.
