Comic duo Mitchell and Webb have gained cult status in recent years for their Channel 4 sitcom Peep Show and sketch show That Mitchell and Webb Look.
Peep Show only wrapped last December and the pair are already in talks for a new ‘odd couple’ sitcom on the channel.
Back is a witty six-part comedy written by Emmy-award winning Simon Blackwell, whose credits include Veep and In The Loop as well as Peep Show.
Mitchell plays a divorced man named Stephen, who finally inherits the family pub after the death of his father, a landlord and local legend. Taking over the pub is Stephen’s big chance to shine as his ‘only achievement’ in life is a ‘slightly disappointing pub refurb’.
Webb plays Andrew, one of a number of children fostered as a teenager by Stephen’s parents. His sheer charisma – he has travelled the world and can do no wrong in the eyes of Stephen’s mother and sister – threatens to thwarts Stephen’s plans when he wants back into the family.
Stephen believes Andrew is a ‘glib, dangerous sociopath who’s about to steal his family, his business and his life’, so dysfunction and comic situations are sure to ensue.
Mitchell said of writer Simon Blackwell: ‘His writing is deep, dark, warm and funny – like a hot tub brimming with laughing gravy.’
Webb added: ‘That sounds disgusting.’
