If there's one thing you can't miss on Netflix it's Bridegroom, a brand new documentary that's been making waves on both sides of the Atlantic since it debuted on Sunday night.
Be warned: You'll need an enormous box of tissues handy when learning about Shane and Tom for the first time. These two young men were in a loving and committed relationship until a tragic accident tore them apart forever.
The tale of Shane's struggle after Tom's passing is incredibly topical, utterly heartbreaking, enraging and inspirational - all at the same time. While the world continues to debate the issue of same sex marriage, Shane shines a spotlight on the reality of the situation for those waiting in limbo, revealing how people without the legal protections of marriage can find themselves completely ostracized.
It's rather difficult to describe the impact this documentary has, but we think former US President Bill Clinton put it best: "This is really, on one level, a wonderful, sad, heartbreaking yet exhilarating and life affirming story," he said. "And on another level, it’s a story about our nation’s struggle to make one more step in forming a more perfect union, for which marriage is both the symbol and substance"
It's no wonder this little film won the Audience Awards for Best Documentary at the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival, the 2013 Toronto Inside Out Festival and the 2013 Little Rock Film Festival as well as Outstanding Documentary Feature at the 2013 Outfest in LA.
