Here's three movies you need to watch on TV this weekend...
Friday - 7.10PM
Film4 - Airplane!
Quite simply, Airplane! is one of the funniest films ever made. Really. In fact, it's so funny that if you watch this with someone and they don't laugh - at all - you need to consider not having that person in your life. It effectively gave birth to the spoof genre, it's got some of the most iconic lines in comedy history and it still holds up to this very day. Surely we can't be serious? Yes, we are serious - and don't call us Shirley.
Saturday - 10.00PM
TV3 - Warrior
While it might follow a few cliches from other sporting films, Warrior has heart and drama left over and showcases some incredible acting talent from both Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton. The two play brothers who have been estranged for some time, and both find their way into MMA fighting as a means to support themselves. However, when both enter a winner-takes-all tournament with a prize of $5,000,000, the two are locked on a path that'll see them have to face each other and their family history. It's deep stuff, but it's done with heart and earnestness and makes for a cracking good film.
Sunday - 9.00PM
BBC Two - Foxcatcher
Steve Carrell is barely recognisable as the elusive millionaire John E. DuPont, who takes troubled wrestling champion Mark Schultz (Channing Tatum) under his wing and mentors him. Before long, it becomes clear that DuPont is severely damaged himself and the relationship between the two turns toxic, and is only made worse when Mark's brother, Dave (Mark Ruffalo) joins them in training the US wrestling team. It's bleak and moves almost at a snail's pace, but the film is absolutely dripping with tension and Carrell gives one of his best performances as DuPont.
