As much as we loved Big Little Lies, we were all a little bit hesitant about a season two, even though we knew it had the likes of Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon returning, but the story was told, you know? However, now they've only gone and brought in the big guns, as the one and only Meryl Streep joins the cast.

The Oscar winning actress is set to play Mary Louise Wright, mother of the abusive Perry Wright (Alexander Skarsgard). She's described as a woman who is concerned for the well-being of her grandchildren following her son Perry's death and arrives in Monterey looking for answers.

HBO says season two will explore the "malignancy of lies, the durability of friendships, the fragility of marriage and, of course, the vicious ferocity of sound parenting. Relationships will fray, loyalties will erode … the potential for emotional and bodily injury shall loom."

Streep previously earned an Emmy win for her leading role in HBO's miniseries adaptation of Angels in America, but Big Little Lies will be her largest TV role to date after that.

Roll on season two!
