Grey's Anatomy is set to go on, and on, and on... forever! Okay well, maybe not forever but as close as. Stars Ellen Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey have reportedly signed another two year contract. The pair, who play doctors Meredith Grey and Derek Shepherd, have been with the show since its inception in 2005, and are the staple couple in the series.
They began as the classic 'will they/won't they' on the show, but since then have gotten married, had babies and come across every life threatening situation known to man. So what else could possibly be in store for the pair? That will be left in the hands of the series creator Shonda Rhimes, who also plans on sticking with the show for the long haul.
Dempsey told TV Guide before: "I think it's been very clear from ABC and also Shonda that she'll continue on with the show."
"You look at ER and it went on for 15 years and a lot of the original cast was gone from there. Because [our show is] such a procedural, I think it will continue to go on."
At this rate, we could be watching Meredith and Derek head off into retirement together. Not that we don't love the emotional ROLLERCOASTER that is an episode of Grey's, and indeed, admiring the jawline of 'McDreamy' - but sometimes there can be too much of a good thing, you know?
If you have somehow managed to miss out on the epic tales of Seattle Grace hospital you can watch the first nine seasons over on Netflix. Just remember to do so with the tissues at hand.
Here's a little smushy montage of Derek and Meredith for the time being, just in case you can't get enough.
