Lost was undoubtedly one of the most successful TV shows of the noughties, however it had one of the most dissatisfying and bizarre endings that still frustrates people to this day. (Were they dead all along? What was with the black smoke?! Why was there a polar bear?! And breathe.)
However, it could have been much different and a hell of a lot more action packed. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof said they actually had wanted to end it with the explosion of the volcano on the island.
"The question was always, how do you basically visualize and dramatize the idea that the island itself is all that separates the world from hellfire and damnation?
"And the answer was the volcano."
The plan was for the volcano to erupt during a showdown between Matthew Fox's character Jack and The Man in Black over The Island's fate.
"The volcano had been dormant for the duration of the series, but based on moving into this endgame, the island had become unstable and the volcano was going to erupt," Lindelof said.
"We were going to have lots of seismic activity, and ultimately, there was going to be this big fight between the forces of good and the forces of evil, which ended up in the series manifesting as Jack and The Man in Black, in the midst of magma. Magma spewing everywhere!"
However, turns out the budget didn't quite cover massive volcanic eruptions: "ABC was like, 'Guys, we love you, and we're letting you end the show; we can't let you bankrupt the network in the process,'" Lindelof said.
Instead, they fought it out on a cliff top in the pouring rain, which was cool and all, but no volcano spewing magma. TUT.
