Although we primarily know Ellen DeGeneres from her hugely popular TV show and the likes of Finding Nemo and Finding Dory, she originally began her career as a standup comic.

In fact, DeGeneres was one of the few female comedians who got a slot on Johnny Carson's show back in the late '80s. In a tweet today, Netflix pointed out that it's been fifteen years since DeGeneres did a standup special and if she wanted to do one - which she replied in the positive.

Other than that, there's not much to tell. Obviously, this is clearly a way of announcing said news and no official statement has been issued as of yet, nor is there any kind of timeframe for release. Then again, Netflix just picked up that Rihanna / Lupita Nyong'o meme thing with Ava DuVernay to direct and Issa Rae scripting - so it's entirely possible they did this all on a whim.

Either way, Netflix's standup specials are big draws for the streaming service and put them in direct competition with HBO's specials. Getting someone of Ellen DeGeneres' stature back on stage doing comedy is a big get for them.

Here's the aforementioned slot DeGeneres did on Johnny Carson's show back in the '80s.
