Ever since Jimmy Fallon ruffled Trump's hair during the US Election, there's always been air over his show and it's led to Fallon falling to third place behind Colbert and Kimmel in ratings.
The moment itself was in the middle of a particularly fawning interview, and let's not forget that Trump had said plenty of awful things before said interview - so it's not as if Fallon was going unaware of who he was talking to and what he was dealing with.
At any rate, Fallon was asked about why he's stayed off Trump in his show when others - specifically Kimmel, Meyers and Colbert - have turned their show into hour-long political comedy shows. Fallon's response? He's not a political comic.
In an interview with the Today Show, Fallon explained that political comedy is "just not what I do. I think it’d be weird for me to start doing it now."
"I don’t really even care that much about politics. I gotta be honest. I love pop culture more than I love politics," said Fallon. He's not wrong, in fairness. Compared to Stephen Colbert - who hosted a political comedy show for many years before The Late Show - Fallon's only experience with political stuff was on SNL, and even then, he stayed away from it for the most part.
Then again, Kimmel wasn't much of a political comedian either, and all Seth Meyers really did on SNL was Weekend Update - so is that really an excuse for Fallon? It's hard to say.
