The actor blames the "politicized atmosphere" on the set of the show and said "I don’t see how I can return."
Jeffrey Tambor has departed from his Emmy Award-winning role as Maura Pfefferman in Amazon's 'Transparent' following a second allegation of sexual harassment on the set of the show.
"Playing Maura Pfefferman on Transparent has been one of the greatest privileges and creative experiences of my life," he told Deadline yesterday.
"What has become clear over the past weeks, however, is that this is no longer the job I signed up for four years ago.
"I’ve already made clear my deep regret if any action of mine was ever misinterpreted by anyone as being aggressive, but the idea that I would deliberately harass anyone is simply and utterly untrue.
"Given the politicized atmosphere that seems to have afflicted our set, I don’t see how I can return to Transparent."
Tambor's departure from the show comes after two allegations of sexual harassment were made against him, one by former assistant Van Barnes, the other by 'Transparent' guest star Trace Lysette. Amazon is currently investigating both claims.
Per Deadline, neither Amazon nor Soloway could be reached for a response to Tambor’s announcement.
A fifth season of the show is expected next year, but whether Tambor's part will be written out or recast remains to be seen.
